Over the past seven years, 12 Points has developed a particular talent for uncovering the extraordinary richness of Scandinavian vocals, and Norwegian singer Live Foyn Friis is a worthy addition to the list. Björk is a constant reference for contemporary singers, and rightly so, but Björk’s roots in Icelandic traditional music are roots she shares with other Scandinavian vocalists, and Foyn Friis is finding her own way within that tradition. With her Danish partners, Alex Jonsson on guitar and Jens Madsen on bass, she crafts an earthy, shamanic sound that is equal parts folk, jazz, indy and country.
Madsen doubles as the group’s drummer, thumping and slapping his bass, while Jonsson picks out ringing, countrified chords on his guitar, proving once again that Bill Frisell has cast a long shadow over this generation of guitarists. The Umea crowd clearly get where Foyn Trio are coming from and respond accordingly. Smiles all round.

12 Points Festival hör hemma i Dublin men arrangeras vartannat år i en annan europeisk stad. Tolv unga jazzgrupper från tolv länder väljs ut och uppträder under festivalen.
I sändningen under lördagskvällen kommer du bland annat att få höra svenska Elin Larsson group, Pixel från Norge, schweiziska Scnellertollermeier, Five38 från Paris, danska Foyn Trio, belgiska LABtrio, The more socially relevant jazz music ensemble från Amsterdam, Violet Spin från Wien, britten Alexander Hawkins, Herd från Finland, Alarmist från Dublin och Marcin Masecki från Polen.
Programledare är Märet Öman och Pierre Martin.
They started in 2009 as a trio, Foyn Trio!, and released in 2011 their debut album “Joy Visible”. They changed the name to Live Foyn Friis when they play with drummer Andreas Skamby, and to Live Foyn Friis with Strings when they play with a stringsquartet, but still keeps the trio Foyn Trio!, which will release more albums later! The two new albums coming will come out in the name Live Foyn Friis “With Strings” & “Running Heart”.
12 Points showcases 12 young European jazz ensembles each year, creating a unique networking opportunity for its participants. It is a valuable resource for festival bookers and jazz media seeking a high quality pan-European showcase of emerging jazz talent.

Two Danes and a Norwegian comprise the Aarhus based Foyn Trio, but their sound speaks to the wider creative energies of many young musicians across Scandinavia today. Pivoting on the voice of Live Foyn Friis, here is soulful, unhurried music that speaks for itself in an impressionistic spacewhere categorization seems especially futile.
Guitarist Alex Jønsson and bassist Jens Madsen are primarily concerned with texture, painting in loops and colours and their own voices, adding to the music’s panoramic feel. It’s a beautiful frame for the star attraction; Live Foyn Friis’ ethereal, bittersweet, occasionally Bjorkesque delivery, a voice you’d be happy to hear anywhere.

Live Foyn Friis kennen aufmerksame Nordlicht-Klub Besucher bereits aus der ersten Tour im Januar.
Damals trat die Norwegerin im Zusammenspiel mit ihrem Foyn Trio auf. Nun kommt die sympathische Dame mit veränderter Formation wieder zurück und hat viele neue Songs von ihrer im nächsten Jahr erscheinenden neuen CD im Gepäck. Das Talent von Live ist inzwischen weit über die skandinavischen Grenzen hinaus bekannt. Sie spielte dieses Jahr eine ausgedehnte Tour in Südamerika und überzeugt mit ihrer umwerfenden Stimme und der einzigartigen Art des songwritings. LIVE FOYN FRIIS ist alleine schon einen Besuch im letzten NORDLICHT KLUB im alten Jahr wert. Diese zierliche Dame ist eine Urgewalt, eine Explosion und eine wirklich einzigartige Künstlerin.
